Liga ini didirikan di [[Montreal]], [[Quebec]], [[Kanada]] pada tahun [[1917]] setelah terhentinya liga hoki es sebelumnya, [[National Hockey Association]] (NHA) yang didirikan tahun [[1909]]. Sebanyak 30 tim mengikuti liga ini, dengan 24 berasal dari Amerika Serikat dan 6 lainnya berasal dari Kanada. Ke-30 tim di liga ini menjadi dua konferensi: yaitu [[Eastern Conference (NHL)|Eastern Conference]] dan [[Western Conference (NHL)|Western Conference]]. Kompetisi ini terbagi menjadi enam divisi, yaitu Atlantik, Timur Laut, Tenggara (Eastern Conference) dan Tengah, Barat Laut, dan Pasifik (Western Conference). Dalam satu musim dimainkan 1230 pertandingan, atau 82 pertandingan setiap tim untuk menentukan peringkat klasemen. Delapan tim teratas di setiap konferensi melaju ke babak eliminasi playoff hingga menyisakan dua tim yang menjuarai konferensinya masing-masing untuk bertemu di [[Stanley Cup]] untuk perebutan gelar juara.
