Mohammad Ali menyelesaikan pendidikan sarjananya pada Fakultas Ilmu Pendidikan [[Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia]] tahun 1979. Selanjutnya gelar Magister Pendidikan (M.Pd.) ia peroleh dari [[Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia]] tahun 1987 dan gelar Master of Arts (M.A.) berhasil dicapainya tahun 1990 di [[University of Pittsburgh]], [[USA]]. Sementara itu, gelar [[doktor]] berhasil diperoleh Mohammad Ali dari [[Institut Pertanian Bogor]] tahun 1999.

Karier Mohammad Ali dimulai sebagai staf pengajar [[IKIP Bandung]] tahun 1980. Ia menikah dengan Dra. Hj. Sumiati yang berprofesi sebagai guru di [[SMA Negeri 1 Lembang|SMAN 1 Lembang]], Bandung Barat yang sejak bulan Agustus 2018 menjalani masa pensiun. Pasangan ini dikaruniai seorang putra dan empat orang putri (lima orang), yang saat ini semuanya sudah berkeluarga.
