Setelah lulus dari [[:en:Trinity College, Cambridge|Trinity College]], [[Universitas Cambridge|Cambridge]] pada tahun 1835 sesudah belajar di [[Southwark]],<ref>{{acad|id=SCRR831FH|name=Scrivener, Frederick Henry Ambrose}}</ref> ia menjadi guru mata pelajaran "Klasik" pada sejumlah sekolah di Inggris selatan, dan dari tahun 1846 sampai 1856 ia menjadi kepala sekolah di [[:en:Falmouth, Cornwall|Falmouth, Cornwall]]. Ia juga bekerja selama 15 tahun sebagai rektor [[:en:Gerrans|Gerrans]], Cornwall.
