Namun, nasib mujurnya berakhir pada 16 Februari 1944, dimana ia terluka parah oleh dua torpedo dari kapal selam USS Skate di perairan Truk. Namun ia masih bisa bertahan sehari lamanya sehingga ia bisa memindahkan 523 awak kapalnya ke destroyer Oite sebelum akhirnya tenggelam fajar keesokan harinya.
