Dalam Alkitab [[Kitab Kejadian]] [[Kejadian 9|pasal 9]], yaitu kitab pertama [[Alkitab Ibrani]], dicatat bagaimana [[Nuh]] mengutuk [[Kanaan]] menjadi hamba saudara-saudaranya, dan bagaimana Tuhan memberikan tanah Kanaan kepada [[Abraham]] dan keturunannya. Anak-anak Israel (keturunan Abraham) sendiri menjadi budak di Mesir, tetapi melalui [[Musa]], Allah membawa mereka [[keluar dari Mesir]] dan mencapai perbatasan tanah perjanjian, Kanaan. Musa memerintahkan mereka untuk merebut tanah dengan penaklukan, dan menempatkan mereka di bawah perintah Yosua.
