Kata "slogan" mulai digunakan sejak tahun 1513, sebagai salah satu variasi dari istilah ''"slogorn"'' yang lebih tua, yakni bentuk [[Anglisasi]] dari kata [[bahasa Gaelik Skotlandia|Gaelik Skotlandia]], ''sluagh-ghairm'', yang berarti pekik perang (''sluagh'' berarti "bala tentara", dan ''gairm'' berarti "pekik").<ref name="Merriam-Webster-p1174">Merriam-Webster (2003), hlm. 1174.</ref> Slogan digunakan dalam [[heraldik]], teristimewa dalam heraldik Skotlandia.
