Karyanya merupakan peralihan dari konsep seni abad 19 menuju kebebasan mutlak seni pada abad 20. Karyanya merupakan pemberontakan terhadap pakem impresionisme yang saat itu sedang populer dan menjadi inspirasi seniman pembaharu seperti gaya [[kubisme]] [[Picasso]], meskipun gayanya sendiri belum bisa disebut kubisme. Karyanya juga menginspirasi seniman [[fauvisme]]
