Kim Gi-taek (Song Kang-ho), seorang sopir yang menganggur, tinggal bersama istrinya Park Chung-suk (Jang Hye-jin) berikut putra-putri mereka bernama Kim Gi-u (Choi Woo-shik) dan Kim Gi-jeong (Park So-Dam) di [[ruang bawah tanah]] yang buruk. Pekerjaan harian mereka adalah melipat [[kotak piza]]. Suatu hari, teman Gi-u, Min-hyuk (Park Seo-joon) mengunjungi keluarga Kim. Min-hyuk berencana menuntut ilmu ke luar negeri, sehingga menyarankan Gi-u mengambil alih pekerjaannya sebagai guru les privat bahasa Inggris Park Da-hye (Jung Ji-so), anak perempuan keluarga kaya Park Dong-ik (Lee Sun-kyun) dan istrinya Choi Yeon-gyo (Jo Yeo-jeong) sekaligus kakak dari Park Da-song (Jung Hyun-joon). Gi-u bersedia menerima tawaran kawannya.
Kim Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) hidup bersama istrinya Park Chung-suk (Jang Hye-jin), putranya Kim Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik), dan putrinya Kim Ki-jeong (Park So-Dam) di ''banjiha'', apartemen semi-bawah tanah yang kecil dan kumuh. Pekerjaan harian mereka adalah melipat kotak piza dengan penghasilan yang sangat kecil dan kesulitan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Suatu hari, Ki-Woo menerima tawaran kawannya, Min-hyuk (Park Seo-joon), untuk mengambil alih pekerjaannya sebagai guru les privat bahasa Inggris untuk Park Da-hye (Jung Ji-so), anak perempuan keluarga kaya Park Dong-ik (Lee Sun-kyun) dan istrinya Choi Yeon-gyo (Jo Yeo-jeong) sekaligus kakak dari Park Da-song (Jung Hyun-joon), karena berencana menuntut ilmu ke luar negeri. Min-hyuk juga memberikan "batu keberuntungan".
 
Perlahan-lahan, keluarga Kim berusaha agar satu per satu anggota keluarga mereka dapat bekerja di keluarga Park, dengan saling menganjurkan satu sama lain dan berbohong sebagai penyedia jasa profesional yang saling tidak kenal. Ki-woo menjadi guru les (yang mereka panggil "Kevin") dan diam-diam memulai hubungan romantis dengan Da-hye. Ketika Yeon-gyo berniat mencarikan guru dan terapis seni untuk Da-song, Ki-woo memanfaatkan kesempatan ini dengan menyarankan seorang "profesional" bernama Jessica yang berasal dari [[Chicago, Illinois]], Amerika Serikat, yang ternyata justru Ki-jeong saudarinya sendiri. Ki-jeong kemudian memfitnah sopir keluarga Park dengan meletakkan celana dalamnya di dalam mobil milik keluarga Park. Dong-ik mengusir sopir itu dan menggantinya dengan seorang mantan sopir valet yang ternyata Ki-taek. Dan untuk terakhir kalinya, Ki-taek berkomplot dengan kedua anaknya untuk menarik sang ibu, Chung-suk menjadi [[asisten rumah tangga]], dengan mencoba menakut-nakuti bahwa pembantu mereka saat ini, Mun-gwang (Lee Jung-eun), mengidap [[tuberkulosis]] dengan memanfaatkan alergi persik yang dideritanya.
 
Suatu hari, keluarga Park berkemah selama sehari-semalam sebagai hadiah atas ulang tahun Da-song. Keluarga Kim berpesta pora, menikmati fasilitas mewah dan mabuk-mabukan di rumah itu. Pada malam hari saat hujan deras turun, Mun-gwang tiba-tiba meminta izin masuk ke rumah karena ingin mengambil sesuatu di ruang bawah tanah. Saat seluruh keluarga bersembunyi, Chung-suk mengizinkan Mun-gwang masuk. Tanpa diduga siapapun, Mun-gwang menunjukkan sebuah [[bungker]], tempat suaminya Geun-se (Park Myung-hoon) bersembunyi selama empat tahun untuk menghindari jeratan [[rentenir]]. Ketika Chung-suk mengancam akan memanggil polisi, kebohongan keluarga Kim secara tidak sengaja terbongkar. Tanpa pikir panjang, Mun-gwang memanfaatkan kesempatan itu dengan merekam mereka dan mengancam untuk mengirim rekaman itu kepada Keluarga Park. Mun-gwang dan Geun-se "menyandera" mereka. Namun saat Mun-gwang dan Geun-se lengah, keluarga Kim berusaha merebut ponsel Mun-gwang dan saling berkelahi di ruang keluarga. Keluarga Kim akhirnya berhasil merebut ponsel itu.
Yeon-gyo yang mengetahui Gi-u menggantikan Min-hyuk langsung menerima Gi-u dengan senang hati. Gi-u terkaget-kaget dengan pemandangan rumah keluarga kaya itu yang dianggapnya menakjubkan. Gi-u juga melihat lukisan Da-song. Ketika Yeon-gyo berniat mencarikan guru seni untuk Da-song, Gi-u memanfaatkan kesempatan ini dengan menyarankan seorang "profesional" bernama Jessica yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat yang ternyata justru saudaranya sendiri Gi-jeong. Gi-jeong berhasil mengambil hati Yeon-gyo karena berhasil membuat Da-song menuruti perintah Gi-jeong. Karena berniat memasukkan ayahnya ke rumah itu, Gi-jeong memfitnah supir keluarga Park dengan meletakkan celana dalamnya di dalam mobil milik keluarga Park. Dong-ik mengusir supir itu dan menggantinya dengan "Paman Kim" yang ternyata Gi-taek, sesuai saran Gi-jeong. Gi-taek berkomplot dengan kedua anaknya untuk membuat Mun-gwang (Lee Jung-eun) angkat kaki dari rumah itu. Kedua anak itu menaburkan bubuk [[persik]] ke Mun-gwang, sementara ayahnya ber[[swafoto]] di di depan Mun-gwang yang menunggu di rumah sakit. Gi-taek menyarankan Dong-ik mempekerjakan seseorang yang berasal dari agen pekerja The Care (perusahaan palsu rekaan dirinya sendiri) yang ternyata adalah Chung-suk. Dong-ik percaya dengan Gi-taek ketika melihat kartu nama The Care yang dinilainya mewah, sehingga Chung-suk berhasil menjadi pembantu rumah tangga di rumah itu. Suatu hari, Keluarga Park berkemah selama sehari-semalam sebagai hadiah atas ulang tahun Da-song, sehingga Keluarga Kim berpesta pora sambil mabuk-mabukan di rumah itu sehari semalam.
 
Karena hujan sangat deras, Keluarga Park tiba-tiba membatalkan liburan mereka dan menelepon Chung-suk. Keluarga Kim menyekap Mun-gwang dan Geun-se di bungker, serta membersihkan ruang keluarga dan kemudian bersembunyi, sementara Chung-suk terbirit-birik memasak ''ramyeon'' sebagaimana permintaan Yeon-gyo. Ketika Mun-gwang berhasil melarikan diri menuju ruang keluarga, Chung-suk menendangnya kembali sehingga Mun-gwang terpental ke bawah. Kepala Mun-gwang membentur dinding dan mengalami gegar otak. Saat Chung-suk menyajikan hidangannya, Yeon-gyo mengungkapkan pengalaman traumatik Da-song yang pernah ia alami beberapa tahun lalu saat ia melihat sosok yang dikira hantu, yang sebenarnya adalah Geun-se yang keluar dari bungker. Saat keluarga Kim yang tersisa bersembunyi di bawah meja, Dong-ik mengeluhkan soal bau badan Ki-taek kepada istrinya.
Ketika pada malam hari saat hujan deras turun, kegembiraan itu sirna tatkala Mun-gwang membunyikan bel dan meminta diizinkan masuk karena ingin mengambil sesuatu di ruang bawah tanah. Saat seluruh keluarga bersembunyi, Chung-suk mengizinkan Mun-gwang masuk. Di ruang bawah tanah, Mun-gwang membuka pintu rahasia ke bungker, tempat suaminya Geun-se (Park Myung-hoon) bersembunyi selama empat tahun untuk menghindari rentenir. Ketika Chung-suk mengancam akan memanggil polisi, keluarga lainnya tersandung menimpa dirinya dan tidak sengaja memanggil dengan nama sebenarnya. Tanpa pikir panjang, Mun-gwang memanfaatkan kesempatan itu dengan merekam mereka dan berencana mengirim rekaman itu kepada Keluarga Park. Mun-gwang dan Geun-se "menawan" mereka dengan memperlakukan mereka seolah-olah tahanan presiden negara jiran Korea Utara, [[Kim Jong-un]]. Ketika Mun-gwang dan Geun-se lengah, Keluarga Kim berusaha merebut ponsel Mun-gwang dan semuanya saling berkelahi. Keluarga Kim akhirnya berhasil mendapatkan ponsel itu dan langsung menghapus rekaman itu. Karena hujan, Keluarga Park membatalkan liburan mereka dan menelepon Chung-suk. Keluarga Kim menyekap Mun-gwang dan Geun-se di bungker serta membersihkan ruang keluarga dan kemudian bersembunyi, sementara Chung-suk membuat [[ramyeon]] sebagaimana permintaan Yeon-gyo. Mun-gwang berhasil membebaskan diri dan berlari menuju ruang keluarga, tetapi Chung-suk menendangnya sehingga Mun-gwang terpental ke bawah. Kepala Mun-gwang membentur dinding dan terluka parah.
 
Memanfaatkan penghunikeadaan rumahDong-ik dan istrinya yang tidurtertidur, Ki-taek, Ki-jeong, dan Ki-woo meninggalkan rumah dan berlari ke rumah mereka. Mereka mendapati lingkungan tempat tinggal mereka diterjang banjir, yangapartemen dalammereka teredam hingga setinggi dada, dan langsung berupaya menyelamatkan barang-barang yang masih bisa diselamatkan. Ki-woo membawa "batu keberuntungan" besarke Min-Hyuksebuah menghadiahkangelanggang keluarganya.olahraga Ketiganya,tempat bersamadi denganmana warga terlantaryang lainnya, tidur dikebanjiran gimnasiumdiungsikan. Sementara itu, Moon-kwang meninggal karenaakibat gegar otak saat, Geun-sae menangis.
 
HariKeesokan berikutnya, Ny. ParkYeon-gyo mengadakan pesta ulang tahun untuk Da-song. danIa mengundang Kimsseluruh untukKi-jeong berpartisipasi.dan SaatKi-woo, pestasementara berlangsung,Ki-taek dan Chung-suk diminta datang untuk bekerja. Ki-woo membawa batu ke bunker, berniat untuk membunuh Geun-sae. Geun-sae menyergap Ki-woo dan membukamemukul kepalanya dengan batu, lalu kabur. BerbekalMencoba pisau,membalas Geundendam atas kematian istrinya Moon-saegwang, menabrakia pestamengambil pisau dapur dan menusuk Ki-jeong di dada.depan Penampilannyapara memicutamu memoripesta traumatisyang menjerit ketakutan. Da-lagusong danmengalami anakkejang ituakibat mulaitrauma mengalamisetelah kejang.melihat Geun-sae, sementara Ki-taek bergegas untuk menghentikan pendarahan Ki-jeong saat Pak ParkDong-ik berteriak kepadanya untuk melemparkan kunci mobil agar Pak Park dapat mengantarmengantarkan Da-song ke rumah sakit. KunciNamun, yangKi-taek dilemparkanmelemparkan kunci mobil dan kunci itu terperangkap di bawah pertempuran ChoongChung-sookseok dan Geun-sae yang sedang berkelahi, tepat sebelum ChoongChung-sookseok membunuhmenewaskan Geun-sae dengan tusuktusukan daging.
