Dalam [[mitologi]], penggambaran diri kurcaci adalah rupanya yang seperti [[manusia]], tetapi berukuran lebih kecil dan pendek. Mereka berjanggut panjang dan tampak lebih tua dari ukuran tubuhnya. Mereka hidup di gua-gua di daerah pegunungan atau di bawah tanah. Mereka mampu beradaptasi di lingkungan bawah tanah dan mampu melihat dengan baik di dalam kegelapan. Di sana mereka menggali barang-barang tambang seperti emas, perak, besi, dan sebagainya. Mereka juga merupakan pembuat senjata dan tukang besi yang mahir. Mereka biasanya memperdagangkan barang-barang dari logam.
Meskipun lari mereka lambat dan tidak mahir menunggang kuda, mereka mampu mempertahankan daerah kekuasaan dengan baik. Beberapa legenda menyebutkan bahwa mereka mahir dalam menciptakan barang-barang pusaka. Dalam [[mitologi Nordik]], mereka menciptakan rantai pusaka yang mampu mengikat
