Pada tahun [[2001]], Flo Rida diajak [[Fresh Kid Ice]] sebagai ''hype man'' baginya dalam tur ke [[Hawaii]]. Sebelum berangkat, ia sempat merekam pita demo yang menarik perhatian [[DeVante]], mantan anggota [[Jodeci]]. Devante memperkenalkan Flo Rida kepada tokoh-tokoh industri musik hip hop dan label mayor. Namun Flo Rida belum beruntung dan harus bekerja sambilan di luar bidang musik. Ia sempat kuliah di [[Universitas Las Vegas]] selama seminggu, dan kuliah di [[Universitas Barry]] selama dua bulan tetapi berhenti. Sekembalinya di Florida, karier bermusik kembali dilanjutkannya setelah ditelepon pihak label indie [[Poe Boy Entertainment]].<ref name="billboard"/>
Setelah Poe Boy Entertainment mengontraknya pada tahun [[2007]], Flo Rida mulai berkawan dengan ''rapper'' lain dari Florida, seperti [[Rick Ross (rapper)|Rick Ross]], [[Trina]], dan [[Trick Daddy]]. Sebelum ikut dalam album ''We the Best'', Flo Rida merilis singel promosi berjudul "[[Birthday (lagu Flo Rida)|Birthday]]" yang menampilkan Rick Ross.
