[[Survei Geologi Amerika Serikat]] melaporkan bahwa gempa berkekuatan {{M\|w\|link=y}} 7,0 sedangkan GEOSCOPE melaporkan gempa berkekuatan {{M\|w\|link=y}} 7.2 di kedalaman 39 km (24 mil), sedangkan GCMT melaporkan peristiwa tersebut berkekuatan 7.1. Menurut PAGER, gempa bumi tersebut menyebabkan guncangan yang merusak dengan intensitas V-VII (Sedang-Sangat Kuat) di kota [[Ambunti]], [[Angoram]], Wewak, [[Aitape]], Porgera dan Wabag, sehingga total populasinya berjumlah sekitar 1,12 juta jiwa.
