Pelé kemudian pensiun sebagai pemain [[Santos]] pada tahun 1972. Selama 17 tahun kariernya bersama [[Santos]] Pelé telah mengoleksi total 1.115659 penampilan dan mencetak 1.091643 gol sekaligus membuat 303 assist l. Ini merupakan sebuah rekor klub.

Pada tahun 1974, Pelé tampil sebagai duta sepak bola untuk [[Amerika Serikat]] dalam rangka memopulerkan sepak bola bersama dengan [[Franz Beckenbauer]] dan [[Johan Cruyff]].
