== Sejarah ==
Pulau ini tercipta 500 juta tahun, yaitu pada zaman [[Kambria]]. Pada zaman itu, sebuah benua besar bernama [[Gondwana]] yang terletak di [[Kutub Selatan]], berpecah menjadi ''cebisan'' tanah yang kecil yang kini dapat dijumpai di 4 tempat di bumi, yaitu [[Afrika]], [[Australia]], [[India]], dan Langkawi. Pegunungan Gondwana terletak di barat daya Langkawi. Pembentukan batu Gondwana yang menakjubkan melonjak tinggi berdekatan Tanjung Batu, berdirinya Pegunungan Mat Chinchang yang meliputi sebagian Pegunungan Gondwana.
 
Pada [[abad ke-15]], nama Lung-Ya-Kiou-Yi tercatat di sebuah piagam yang dipercayai digunakan oleh Laksamana [[Cheng Ho]] ketika melawat [[Melaka]] pada tahun 1405. Pada [[abad ke-16]], pulau terpencil ini diberi pelbagai nama dalam peta zaman itu. Antara lain Langa, Lanka, Lansura, dan Langapura.
 
Pada tahun 1621 Jenderal [[Augustin de Beaulieu]] yang bertugas kepada Raja [[Louis XIII dari PerancisPrancis]], menyifati Langkawi sebagai Lancahui atau [[lada]] sulah. Ia kemudian menulis, "Tanahnya subur dengan buah-buahan, beras dan ternak. Beberapa batang sungai menyediakan sumber air bersih, hutan luas dapat dilihat dan pantainya cantik serta berjuraian dengan teluk dan pulau-pulau kecil sekelilingnya".
