Ia dianggap sebagai salah satu pelari jarak jauh terbaik sepanjang masa yang berhasil memecahkan 25 rekor dunia dan memenangi berbagai gelar [[Olimpiade]] dan Kejuaraan Dunia. Pada November 2021, Haile Gebreselassie berada di garis depan pertempuran di Ethiopia melawan pemberontak Tigray.
