Awal kemunculan mobil ini adalah mobil konsep Chevrolet YGM1 di Tokyo Motor Show 1999, Cruze generasi pertama merupakan hatchback [[SUV]] 5 pintu yang diproduksi oleh [[Suzuki]] di Jepang. Mobil ini tersedia dalam penggerak roda depan dan [[penggerak 4 roda]]. Mulai dijual di pasar Jepang bulan Oktober 2001, dan juga dijual di pasar Australasia dari tahun 2002-2006.
