Simoncelli meninggal dunia di Sirkuit Sepang pada tanggal 23 Oktober 2011, karena kecelakaan hebat yang dialaminya. Simoncelli terlibat kecelakaan bersama Colin Edwards dan Valentino Rossi saat berada di posisi keempat selama putaran kedua. Motor Simoncelli yang sedang berbelok terjatuh, dan Simoncelli tertabrak oleh motor Edwards. Pada tahun 2006, Simoncelli naik ke kelas 250cc, menjadi satu-satunya pembalap dari delapan teratas di kelas 125cc tahun sebelumnya untuk naik. Simoncelli meninggal dunia di [[Sirkuit Internasional Sepang]] pada 23 Oktober 2011 karena kecelakaan fatal yang dialaminya saat [[Grand Prix Sepeda Motor Malaysia 2011|Grand Prix Malaysia 2011]]. Simoncelli terlibat kecelakaan fatal bersama [[Colin Edwards]] dan [[Valentino Rossi]] saat berada di posisi keempat pada putaran kedua. Simoncelli terjatuh ketika sedang berbelok di tikungan ke-11 Sirkuit Sepang dan tertabrak oleh motor Edwards. Edwards juga terjatuh namun hanya mengalami patah tulang bahu, sementara Simoncelli berbaring diam di lintasan sesaat setelah kecelakaan dengan helmnya terlepas dalam insiden itu.
