Pada tahun 1947, ketika [[Aung San Suu Kyi]] masih berusia 3 tahun, ayahnya yang bernama [[Aung San]] membawa [[Myanmar]] atau lebih dikenal dengan [[Burma]] menuju kemerdekaan dari pihak penjajah. Tetapi setelah [[Burma]] merdeka, pada 17 Juli 1947, ia bersama-sama dengan para koleganya dibantai secara sadis oleh para pasukan militer yang menjadi lawan politiknya.

Pada masa remaja sampai usia dewasa, ia pergi ke [[Inggris]] dan menemukan pasangan hidupnya serta membangun keluarga yang cukup baik. Tetapi, pada tahun 1988, ia terpaksa harus kembali ke [[Burma]] karena kesehatan ibunya menurun. Pada tahun tersebut, kondisi politik di [[Burma]] tidaklah stabil. Para pelajar dan mahasiswa turun ke jalan melakukan demo kepada penguasa militer yang berkuasa dengan semena-mena.

Saat ia menjenguk ibunya di rumah sakit pada tahun 1988, ia melihat banyak korban terluka karena penyerangan terhadap demonstran yang dilakukan oleh pihak militer. Kejadian itu lebih dikenal dengan [[Pemberontakan 8888]]. Dari kejadian tersebut, ia sadar bahwa pergantian politik harus terjadi di [[Burma]] dan reformasi harus segera dilaksanakan. Namun niat baiknya tersebut dihalangi oleh [[Junta Militer]] yang saat itu berkuasa. [[Aung San Suu Kyi]] sampai dikenakan tahanan rumah akibat aktivitas politiknya dengan partai [[NLD]].
