Ortografi ini ditekan pemakaiannya selama penjajahan Jepang di Taiwan (1895–1945), dan sempat menghadapi larangan selama periode hukum perang [[Kuomintang]] (dari 1947–1987). Penggunaan ''pe̍hPe̍h-ōe-jī'' saat ini terbatas pada sejumlah orang [[Kristen]] di Taiwan, pelajar bahasa yang bukan pemakai asli, dan pemakai bahasa yang senang memakainya di Taiwan.
