Desa ini terutama sebuah desa [[Kristen]] ([[Melkite]]) yang terletak kurang lebih 56 [[kilometer|km]] di arah timur laut [[Damaskus]] dan dibangun di atas pegunungan, pada ketinggian lebih dari 1.500 meter. Pada tahun [[2005]], desa ini memiliki penduduk sekitar 2.000.
Ada dua biara penting di Maaloula: Mar Sarkis dan Mar Taqla. Biara Mar Sarkis dibuat pada [[abad ke-4]] di atas reruntuhan kuil pagan, dirancang atas model martir, yang memiliki penampilan sederhana. Dia dinamakan setelah St Sarkis ([[Santo Sergius]]), seorang prajurit Roma yang dieksekusi karena kepercayaan Kristennya. Biara ini masih memiliki karakter tenangnya. Biara Mar Taqla merupakan tempat dari sisa St Taqla (Thekls); putri dari pangeran Seleucid, dan murid dari St Paul. Menurut legenda, pada abad ke-1, St Taqla dikejar oleh prajurit ayahnya, untuk menangkapnya karena kepercayaan Kristennya. Dia tiba di sebuah gunung, dan setelah selesai berdoa, gunung itu membuka dan membuatnya lolos. Desa tersebut mendapat namanya dari rongga atau tempat masuk di gunung. Namun, banyak variasi dari cerita ini di antara para penduduk Maaloula.
Ada pula beberapa tinggalan banyak biara, gereja dan tempat-tempat ibadah lainnya. Banyak yang tinggal menjadi puing, sedangkan yang lain tetap berdiri, menantang zaman. Banyak peziarah datang ke Maaloula, baik kaum Muslim maupun Kristen. Mereka datang untuk mencari berkah dan memberikan persembahan sajian.
