''Senyap'' memfilmkan perjalanan satu keluarga penyintas untuk mendapatkan pengetahuan mengenai bagaimana anak mereka dibunuh dan siapa yang membunuhnya. Adik bungsu korban bertekad untuk memecah belenggu kesenyapan dan ketakutan yang menyelimuti kehidupan para korban, dan kemudian mendatangi mereka yang bertanggung jawab atas pembunuhan kakaknya--sesuatukakaknya—sesuatu yang tak terbayangkan ketika para pembunuh masih berkuasa.

Pengambilan gambar dilakukan di [[Sumatera Utara]] bersamaan dengan pembuatan ''Jagal''. Sebagian besar gambar diambil antara [[2010]] sampai [[2012]].
 
Pemutaran perdana internasional diselenggarakan di [[:en: 71st Venice International Film Festival|Venice International Film Festival]] pada bulan Agustus 2014, sekaligus berkompetisi memperebutkan [[:en: Golden Lion|Golden Lion]].
 
Pemutaran perdana dan peluncuran film ''Senyap'' di Indonesia diselenggarakan oleh [[Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia]] dan [[Dewan Kesenian Jakarta]] pada 10 November 20112014 di Graha Bhakti Budaya, [[Taman Ismail Marzuki]], Jakarta.
