Ia lahir di Victoria, Wells memulai karirnya di Angkatan Darat Australia pada 1916 ketika ia memasuki Royal Military College, Duntroon. Lulus sebagai letnan tiga tahun kemudian, ia bertugas di berbagai staf dan posisi instruksional sebelum pecahnya Perang Dunia Kedua. Awalnya bertugas di Divisi 7 sebagai perwira staf pada tahun 1940, Wells dipromosikan menjadi letnan kolonel dan menjadi penanggung jawab I Korps. Ia bertugas di Yunani dan Afrika Utara, ia dianugerahi Distinguished Service Order untuk kepemimpinannya di El Alamein.
