Maskapai ini didirikan pada tanggal 1 Maret 1951, dengan penerbangan domestik perdana pada tanggal 25 Oktober 1951 dengan pesawat [[Martin 2-0-2]] yang disewa dari [[Northwest Airlines]]. Pada tanggan 1 April 2007. JAL resmi bergabung dengan aliansi [[Oneworld]].
