Tidak seperti kebanyakan gugus terbuka yang bergeser menjauh setelah beberapa juta tahun karena interaksi gravitasi dari galaksi [[Bima Sakti]], NGC 188 terletak jauh di atas bidang galaksi dan merupakan salah satu gugus terbuka yang paling kuno yang diketahui, dengan usia sekitar 6,8 miliar tahun.<ref>
