Istilah rock alternatif diciptakan pada awal 1980-an untuk menggambarkan artis rock yang tidak cocok dengan genre mainstream saat itu. Band yang dijuluki "alternatif" tidak memiliki gaya terpadu, tetapi semuanya terlihat berbeda dari musik arus utama.
