Wilayah di mana bahasa Perancis Kuno dipakai dalam sejarah adalah [[Kerajaan Perancis]] dan vassal-vassalnya (meliputi sebagian dari [[Kekaisaran Angevin]] yang pada abad ke-12 masih berada dibawah kekuasaan [[Inggris-Norman]]), dan [[kadipaten Burgundy|Burgundy]], [[Lorraine (kadipaten)|Lorraine]] dan [[Kabupaten Savoy|Savoy]] di bagian timur (sekarang berada di bagian utara-tengah [[Perancis]], [[Wallonia]] Belgia, [[Swiss barat]] dan [[Piedmont|Italia barat laut]]) namun pengaruh bahasa Perancis Kuno juga menyebar, terutama di wilayah [[Inggris Norman|Inggris]], [[Kerajaan Sisilia|Sisilia]] dan [[negara-negara Salib]] sebagai bahasa elit feodal dan komersial (istilah ''[[lingua franca]]'' berasal dari bahasa Perancis).
