Akatsuki direncanakan memasuki orbit pada 6 Desember 2010 23:49:00 [[UTC]]. Pembakaran bahan bakar berlangsung selama 12 menit untuk mencapai target. Namun setelah kehilangan kontak karena terhalang planet Venus, sesuatu yang telah direncanakan sebelumnya, pemulihan komunikasi dengan Akatsuki tidak berjalan sesuai rencana. Setelah itu, diketahui bahwa Akatsuki memasuki safe mode selama terhalang Venus. Butuh waktu untuk memulihkan kondisi Akatsuki.
