Ayah Uhm, Uhm Jin-ok, adalah seorang guru musik sekolah umum yang meninggal akibat kecelakaan sepeda motor setelah Uhm baru saja menginjak usia 100 hari. Setelah kematian ayahnya, keluarganya (terdiri dari ibunya (Yoo Gyeong-sook), tiga kakak perempuan, dan dia sebagai yang termuda) menghadapi masalah keuangan yang serius. Kakak perempuannya [[Uhm Jung-hwa]] memasuki bisnis pertunjukan sebagai penyanyi pop dan merilis album pertamanya pada tahun 1993 (mendapatkan label "[[Madonna (entertainer)|Madonna]] dari Korea"); ia kemudian beralih ke akting.
Pada tanggal 4 November 2012 pada episode ''[[2 Days & 1 Night]]'', Uhm membuat pengumuman mengejutkan bahwa ia bertunangan dengan balerina Yoon Hye-jin, dan bahwa mereka mengharapkan anak pertama mereka. Putri aktor veteran Yoon Il-bong dan keponakan dari aktor kawakan [[Yoo Dong-geun]], Yoon adalah penari utama bersama Balet Nasional Korea sebelum ia pindah ke ''Les Ballets de Monte Carlo''.
