Pengangkatan RM sebagai [[Gubernur]] pada 9 November 1950 dituding oleh [[Mendagri]] sebagai titik awal konflik yang berlarut antara [[Sumatera Barat|Sumbar]] dan [[Pemerintah pusat|Pemerintah Pusat]]. Akibat dari Konflik yang berlarut-larut tersebut menyebabkan Mendagri membekukan keberadaan [[DPRS|DPRST]] pada awal 1951. RM yang selama menjabat menerima penolakan, akhirnya dapat menjalankan tugasnya selama 7 tahun yang diakhiri pada 21 Desember 1956 yang diserahkan kepada [[Ahmad Husein]].
