Segera setelah penahbisannya, Buddha mengajarkan Rahula tentang arti pentingnya mengatakan kebenaran. Khotbah ini dikenal dengan nama Rahulavada Sutta.<ref>[http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.061.than.html Ambalatthika-rahulovada Sutta]</ref> Buddha menempatkan kebenaran sebagai yang tertinggi di antara nilai-nilai kebajikan lainnya. Para pencari kebenaran, tidak seharusnya melanggar aturan moral (sila) Kebenaran.
 
Rahula kemudian menjadi salah satu arahat berkat petunjuk-petunjuk Buddha. Rahula meninggal sebelum Buddha, Sariputta dan Moggallana.
