Cairan sekresi lintah mengandung beberapa zat bioaktif dengan efek [[antiradang]], [[antikoagulan]], dan antimikroba. Salah satu bahan aktifnya adalah hirudin, protein kecil yang merupakan komponen antikoagulan dalam air liur lintah.
