Keluarga Formicidae adalah bagian dari ordo Hymenoptera, yang mencakup [[lebah]] dan [[tawon]]. Semut adalah keturunan dari generasi tawon [[Vespoidea]]. Analisis [[Filogenetik]] mengindikasikan bahwa semut telah berevolusi dari capung vespoid pada periode Kapur sekitar 120 juta sampai 170 juta tahun yang lalu.
