Pada tahun 1974, GE membuat perjanjian dengan [[Snecma]], untuk membentuk [[CFM International]], yang tujuannya memproduksi mesin pesawat berukuran sedang (nantinya dikenal sebagai [[CFM56]]). Pabrik baru pun dibangun di <ref>{{Harvnb|Neumann|2004|p=234}}</ref> [[Evendale, Ohio]] untuk memproduksi CFM56 ini. Awalnya penjualan mesin ini sangat sulit, hingga muncul wacana pembatalan produksi.
