Demirel lahir pada 1 November 1924 di İslamköy, Atabey, sebuah kota di [[Provinsi Isparta|Isparta]] dari [[Hacı]] Yahya Demirel (1893-1972) dan Hacı Ümmühan Demirel (1902-1979). Dia seorang pelindung pada masa kecilnya. Setelah menamatkan pendidikan SD-nya di kampung halamannya, dia masuk SMP dan SMA-nya di Isparta, [[Muğla]], dan [[Afyon]]. Pada tahun 1948, dia menikahi [[Nazmiye Şener]], sepupu keduanya.
