Saat Perang Dunia I mulai meletus,
Mussolini pada awalnya mendukung keputusan partai. Dalam sebuah artikel yang ditulis pada bulan Agustus 1914, Mussolini menulis: "Hentikan perang. Kami akan tetap netral." Ia memandang perang tersebut sebagai sebuah kesempatan, baik bagi dirinya sendiri, maupun bagi para sosialis dan orang Italia.
