Pada tahun 1959, Kusama membuka pameran solo pertamanya di New York di Brata Gallery, sebuah bengkel seni. Ia memamerkan sejumlah lukisan jaring putih yang mendapat pujian dari [[Donald Judd]] (Judd dan [[Frank Stella]] kemudian membeli lukisan dari kegiatan tersebut).<ref name="victoria-miro1998" /> Kusama kemudian memamerkan karyanya bersama sejumlah seniman, antara lain [[Claes Oldenburg]], [[Andy Warhol]], dan [[Jasper Johns]].
