Lederer, mantan perwira tentara Cekoslowakia dan anggota [[Pemberontakan Protektorat Bohemia dan Moravia|perlawanan Ceko]], gagal memperingatkan orang-orang Yahudi di Ghetto Theresienstadt tentang pembunuhan massal di Auschwitz. Dia dan Pestek kembali ke Auschwitz untuk menyelamatkan Neumann dan ibunya. Pestek ditangkap dalam keadaan yang dipersengketakan dan kemudian dieksekusi. Lederer kembali ke Cekoslowakia yang diduduki, dia bergabung kembali dengan gerakan perlawanan dan berusaha menyelundupkan laporan tentang Auschwitz ke [[Komite Internasional Palang Merah]] di Swiss.
