Gardner meninggal pada hari Jumat, 3 Agustus 2007 akibat penyakit kegagalan hati. Saat itu ia sedang keluar rumah untuk berbelanja, dimana secara tiba-tiba ia terjatuh, sebelum meninggal ia sempat memanggil putrinya, Alexis untuk kemudian di bawa ke rumah sakit, namun karena penyakitnya sudah terlalu parah, jiwa Gardner akhirnya tidak tertolong lagi.
