Satu tentara yang tiba di Meksiko pada tahun 1520 membawa penyakit [[variola]], sehingga memicu wabah yang menewaskan banyak penduduk asli Amerika.<ref>Smith 1996, 2003, hal. 279.</ref> Penyakit dari Eropa yang mewabah di Amerika juga memberikan dampak buruk bagi orang-orang Maya di Petén. Diperkirakan kurang lebih 30.000 Maya Ch'ol dan [[bahasa Ch'olti'|Ch'olti']] di Petén barat tewas pada permulaan abad ke-16. Antara tahun 1559 hingga 1721, banyak orang-orang Maya yang meninggal akibat penyakit, perang, dan pemindahan paksa.<ref name="
