Band ini dibentuk setelah band Josh Homme sebelumnya bubar yaitu Kyuss. Queens of the stone age banyak mengembangkan gaya riff-oriented, musik heavy rock. Sound mereka telah berevolusi menggabungkan berbagai gaya yang berbeda dan berbagai pengaruh, termasuk bekerja sama dengan anggota ZZ Top Billy Gibbons dan Mark Lanegan.
