Mawe dilahrkan di [[Derby]] tahun 1764 putra Samuel Maw(e). Ibunya meninggal ketika ia berusia sepuluh tahun, ia dibesarkan oleh istri kedua ayahnya, Francis (kelahiran Beigton).
