Steve Selvin menulis sebuah surat kepada majalah ''[[The American Statistician]]'' pada tahun 1975 yang menanyakan masalah yang berdasarkan pada acara permainan ''[[Let's Make a Deal]]'' ([[#refSelvin1975a|Selvin 1975a]]). Dalam surat tersebut, ia menamakannya "Masalah Monty Hall" ([[#refSelvin1975b|Selvin 1975b]]).
