Setelah kunjungannya yang pertama ke [[Borneo]] dalam tahun 1973-75, selama bertahun-tahun Sellato menjelajah dengan sampan dan berjalan kaki sambil meneliti bahasa dan antropologi di antara masyarakat hutan pengembara dan petani ''tebas dan bakar'' di hutan Pegunungan Muller dan di beberapa daerah di Kalimantan. Selain menulis sendiri enam buku, Sellato juga menjadi editor dan ko-editor enam buku lagi dan menyumbangkan sejumlah artikel tentang Borneo untuk beberapa buku dan jurnal.
