Anger, Disgust, dan Fear berupaya untuk mempertahankan kondisi emosional Riley saat Joy tidak ada, tapi secara tidak sengaja malah menjauhkan Riley dari orangtuanya, teman-teman, dan hobi, sehingga pulau kepribadiannya perlahan runtuh dan jatuh ke dalam Dump Memory, sebuah jurang di mana kenangan memudar, dibuang dan dilupakan . Anger menyisipkan ide untuk melarikan diri ke Minnesota di konsol kontrol, percaya mereka dapat menghasilkan kenangan inti baru jika kembali ke Minnesota. Sementara itu, Joy dan Sadness bertemu dengan Bing Bong, teman imajinasi Riley yang terlupakan, joy memberikan janji untuk berusaha mengembalikan Bing Bong kedalam imajinasi Riley. Setelah menjelajahi daerah yang berbeda di pikiran Riley; Abstract Thought, Taman Imajinasi, dan Tempat Produksi Mimpi , ketiganya akhirnya berhasil menaiki kereta pemikiran. tetapi tidak bertahan lama, kereta tersebut terjatuh saat terkena reruntuhan pulau kejujuran yang runtuh akibat Riley mencuri kartu kredit ibunya.
Riley berhasil mempersiapkan untuk naik bus menuju Minnesota, Joy mencoba untuk kembali ke Markas melalui pulau
mereka menemukan roket wagon milih bing bong yang dapat mengeluarkan tenaga dorong dan akhirnya berusaha keluar dari Dump Memory, tapi setelah beberapa kali gagal, Bing Bong menyadari berat badan gabungan mereka terlalu berat sehingga ia mengorbankan diri dengan melompat dari roket, supaya Joy bisa keluar dari Dump Memory. Joy menggunakan berbagai alat dari Dunia Imajinasi untuk mendorong dirinya sendiri dan Sadness ke Markas. ketika berhasil sampai di markas Joy mendesak Sadness mengambil kendali dan berhasil menghapus ide kabur riley, dan mendorong Riley untuk kembali ke rumah ketika dirinya baru saja menaiki bus.

Pete docter selaku sutradara mengaku pengalaman banyak memberikan kontribusi pada film ini. Selain dirinya pernah merasakan perpindahan tempat tinggal, hal yang terpenting dalam film ini adalah ketika tahun 2009, docter menyadari perubahan prilaku pada putrinya, Ellie docter yang selama ini ia kenal sebagai wanita yang ceria dan aktif, namun saat itu ia terlihat lebih pendiam dan tertutup. dari itu docter mempunyai sebuah ide untuk menggambarkan apa yang terjadi dalam pikiran manusia, Ia mulai mengembangkan ide itu bersama Jones Rivera sang produser dan Ronnie del Carmen sang sutradara kedua dengan meneliti konsep pikiran pada manusia. Mereka mengadakan konsultasi kepada beberapa ahli psikologis yang tahu mengenai emosi pada manusia, diantaranya adalah Paul Ekman dan dacher Keltner yang menyebutkan emosi terdiri dari 6; Marah, Sedih, Jijik, Riang, Takut, dan Terkejut. docter menyadari emosi Takut dan Terkejut memiliki penggambaran yang mirip sehingga ia menghilangkan terkejut. John Lasseter selaku eksekutif dari Pixar memberikan reaksi yang sangat positif tentang ide docter tersebut, namun juga didapati setelahnya adalah pengembangan film yang sangat sulit.
Ide-ide pun bermunculan pasca produksi, Seperti halnya pemilihan setting psikologis yang memilih riley untuk berada pada umur 11 tahun karena itu merupakan masa terjadinya perubahan emosi dan pengekspresian yang besar pada psikologis manusia. Penggambaran Storyboard terus dilakukan selama 2 sampai 3 tahun dengan bantuan dari grup yang bertanggung jawab pada pengembangan semua film; Pixar Brain Trust. Kevin Nolting menyebutkan bahwa film ini mempunyai 7 versi yang diperdebatkan masing-masing sebelum akhirnya memilih untuk versi yang seperti sekarang.
Salah satunya adalah versi dimana film memfokuskan pada Joy dan Fear hilang bersama diluar markas, hingga docter menyadari cerita tersebut tak akan berhasil dan mengantarkan dirinya pada masa frustasi berat, ia takut bahwa dirinya akan dicepat pada posisinya sebagai sutradara. Ketika ia dalam masa itu dan berjalan-jalan dalam rumahnya selama seminggu, docter memikirkan ia akan kehilangan banyak rekan kerja di Pixar, sampailah tiba-tiba ia menyadari bahwa emosi menghubungkan orang bersama, dan hubungan adalah hal yang terpenting dalam hidup. Setelah itu ia menggantikan Fear dengan Sadness dan mendapat respon positif dari Rivera dan del Carmen. Naskah pun segera ditulis oleh Josh Cooley dan Meg LeFauve.

Inside Out mendapatkan 356 juta dollar pada pemutaran di Amerika Utara dan 500.3 Juta dollar di negara-negara lainnya. Menjadikan Inside Out pendapatan film animasi tertinggi kedua tahun 2015 di belakang Minions, Pendapatan film tertinggi ke-7 tahun 2015, Pendapatan film Pixar tertinggi ke-3, Pendapatan film yang didistribusikan disney tertinggi ke-9, dan pendapatan film tertinggi ke-45 sepanjang masa, dibalik anggaran yang dikeluarkan untuk film ini senilai 175 juta dollar.

Inside Out mendapatkan pujian kritik di seluruh dunia. Website Rotten Tomatoes memberikan rating 98% yang terdiri dari 304 penilaian para kritikus, dengan skor rata-rata 9.0 dari 10, menjadikan film ini menempati posisi 14 pada 100 film teratas yang dirilis pada abad 21, website tersebut juga menyebutkan "Inventive, gorgeously animated, and powerfully moving, ''Inside Out'' is another outstanding addition to the Pixar library of modern animated classics" . Pada website Metacritic film ini mendapatkan skor 94/100 berdasarkan 48 kritik. Website voting CinemaScore memberikan skor dari para penonton luas dengan skala A+ Sampai F, mereka memberikan "A". Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind mendapatkan pujian atas akting pengisian suaranya, sutradara Pete docter juga mendapatkan pujian atas pengarahannya dalam membuat film ini.
