The presentation graphics software ran on computer workstations, such as those manufactured by Trollman, [[Genigraphics]], Autographix, and [[Dicomed]]. It became quite easy{{Dubious|date=February 2010}} to make last-minute changes compared to traditional typesetting and pasteup. It was also a lot easier to produce a large number of slides in a small amount of time. However, these workstations also required skilled operators, and a single workstation represented an investment of $50,000 to $200,000 (in 1979 dollars).

Originally these programs were used to generate 35 mm slides, to be presented using a [[slide projector]]. As these programs became more common in the late 1980s several companies set up services that would accept the shows on [[diskette]] and create slides or print [[transparency (overhead projector)|transparencies]]. Aplikasi presentasi dirancang untuk pembicara yang dapat menyajikan ide-idenya dengan lebih mudah dan para peserta dengan informasi visual yang melengkapi pembicaraan.
Ada banyak jenis presentasi, yaitu presentasi pekerjaan, pendidikan, hiburan, dan presentasi umum. Program presentasi dapat menambah atau mengganti penggunaan teknologi sarana bantu visual yang lebih tua, seperti [[pamflet]], selebaran, papan tulis, flip chart, poster, slide dan transparansi overhead. Naskah, gambar, video, dan objek lainnya ditempatkan pada halaman tersendiri atau "slida" atau "foil". Slida dapat dicetak, atau biasanya ditampilkan pada layar dan diarahkan sesuai keinginan pengguna. Peralihan antarslida dapat ''dihidupkan'' dengan berbagai cara. Biasanya presentasi memiliki banyak kendala dan yang terpenting adalah terbatasnya waktu untuk menyajikan informasi yang sesuai.
