[[JSTOR]].</ref> Ayahnya Robert berasal dari keluarga [[Presbiterian]], dan meninggal akibat minum minuman keras saat Dodds berusia tujuh tahun. Ibunya Anne adalah keturunan [[Inggris-Irlandia]].
