Penggunaan galai dalam peperangan mencapai puncaknya pada pada penghujung abad ke-16 dengan pertempuran-pertempuran seperti yang berlangsung di [[Pertempuran Lepanto|Lepanto]] pada 1571, salah satu pertempuran laut terbesar yang pernah terjadi. Akan tetapi menjelang abad ke-17 kapal-kapal layar dan kapal-kapal hibrida seperti [[sabak]] menggeser penggunaan galai dalam perang laut. Galai adalah kapal perang yang paling lazim digunakan di [[Samudera Atlantik]] sepanjang Zaman Pertengahan, dan kelak masih digunakan secara terbatas di [[Karibia]], [[Filipina]], dan [[Samudera Hindia]] pada permulaan [[Periode modern awal|Zaman Modern]], sebagian besar sebagai kapal patroli dalam pemberantasan [[bajak laut]]. Sejak pertengahan abad ke-16 galai sesekali digunakan di [[Laut Baltik]] yang pendek-pendek jarak tempuh antar lokasinya dan memiliki banyak [[kepulauan|gugus pulau]]. Galai sempat muncul kembali di medan perang pada abad ke-18 dalam peperangan antara [[kekaisaran Rusia|Rusia]], [[Swedia]], dan [[Denmark-Norwegia|Denmark]].
