Nama dan simbol [[unsur kimia]] yang diterima saat ini ditentukan oleh [[International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry]] (IUPAC), biasanya mengikuti rekomendasi dari penemu terpercaya dari masing-masing unsur. Namun, nama beberapa unsur telah menimbulkan kontroversi hingga IUPAC mengeluarkan nama resmi. Dalam kebanyakan kasus, kontroversi akibat dari perselisihan pengakuan yang dianggap penemu pertama unsur tersebut, atau mempertanyakan fakta bukti pendukungnya.
