''Carnotaurus'' bertubuh ringan, predator [[Biped|bipedal]], dengan tinggi antara {{convert|8|to|9|m|abbr=on|ft|1}} dan berat sekitar {{convert|1.35|metric ton|ton|abbr=on}}. Sebagai sebuah theropoda, ''Carnotaurus'' sangat memiliki perbedaan khas, memiliki tanduk tebal di atas kedua matanya, sebuah fitur yang tak terlihat di semua dinosaurus karnivora lainnya, dan tengkorak yang sangat dalam bertopang pada leher yang berotot. ''Carnotaurus'' lebih jauh lagi ditandai oleh ukuran kecil, [[Vestigiality|forelimb asli]] dan panjang, serta hindlimbs yang ramping.
