Istilah tersebut dicanangkan dalam sebuah [[fanzine fiksi ilmiah]] Oktober 1940 oleh [[Russ Chauvenet]] dan pertama kali dipopulerisasikan dalam [[fandom fiksi ilmiah]], dan dari sana, kata tersebut diadopsi oleh komunitas lain.
