Arsitek Denmark Jorn Utzon (1918-) bekerja secara singkat dengan Alvar Aalto, mempelajari karya Le Corbusier, dan melakukan perjalanan ke Amerika Serikat untuk bertemu dengan Frank Lloyd Wright. Pada tahun 1957 ia mendesain salah satu bangunan modernis yang paling dikenal di dunia; Sydney Opera House .. Dia dikenal karena kualitas patung bangunannya, dan hubungannya dengan pemandangan. Lima cangkang beton dari struktur menyerupai kulit kerang di tepi pantai. Dimulai pada tahun 1957, proyek mengalami kesulitan teknis yang cukup membuat kerang dan mendapatkan akustik yang tepat. Utzon mengundurkan diri pada tahun 1966, dan gedung opera belum selesai sampai 1973, sepuluh tahun setelah selesai dijadwalkan.
